PROMs Initiative

Bringing the patient’s own assessment of recovery into routine outcomes research.

Overview

Clinical examination and imaging do not fully describe how a patient feels or functions after neurosurgical treatment. The PROMs Initiative is designed to integrate validated patient-reported outcome measures into longitudinal research so that pain, disability, quality of life and return to meaningful activities become part of the core outcome picture.

Objectives

01. Define condition-appropriate PROMs and clinically meaningful assessment time points.
02. Measure change from pre-treatment baseline and characterise recovery trajectories.
03. Identify minimal clinically important change where validated thresholds are available.
04. Link patient-reported outcomes with clinical, procedural and resource-use data.

Research direction

The long-term goal is to make the patient voice a routine component of outcomes research and to understand which aspects of recovery are captured — or missed — by conventional clinical endpoints.

Collaboration

Project-specific collaboration depends on protocol maturity, governance, ethical approvals and data-sharing arrangements. Centres or investigators interested in aligned research questions are welcome to contact the NORA team.
