30-Day Outcomes Project

Making the first month after neurosurgery measurable, comparable and actionable.

Overview

The first 30 days after neurosurgery contain a high concentration of clinically relevant events, yet these events are often captured inconsistently across diagnoses and procedures. This project develops a standardised framework for early postoperative outcomes that can be applied across neurosurgical practice.

Objectives

01. Measure postoperative complications using reproducible definitions.
02. Track unplanned reinterventions, emergency presentations and hospital readmissions.
03. Describe discharge destination, early neurological or functional recovery and 30-day mortality where relevant.
04. Identify procedure- and patient-level patterns that can inform quality improvement and future risk-adjusted benchmarking.

Research direction

Rather than treating every postoperative event as equivalent, the programme aims to distinguish severity, preventability and clinical consequence. Over time, these data can support targeted quality initiatives and provide a consistent early endpoint for other NORA studies.

Collaboration

Project-specific collaboration depends on protocol maturity, governance, ethical approvals and data-sharing arrangements. Centres or investigators interested in aligned research questions are welcome to contact the NORA team.
